The eyes are an extension of the brain. Light entering the eye gives vast amounts of information to the brain. Not only do the eyes allow you to see, they also give you information about what shape something is, what colour it is, how big an object is, how far away it is, and more.
Your visual system affects how you remember things (see a picture in your mind), how you dream, how you recognize someone’s face, how you find your way in a new area, how dizzy you get when on a boat, or in a car, how comfortable you are on a roller coaster ride, how well you read, and even how well you comprehend what you’ve just read!
In some cases the eyes are not perfectly coordinated. This causes confusion in the brain. The results of brain confusion include: Learning difficulties, reading difficulties, post concussion vision difficulties and play a large part in ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia.
At Vision Sense Optometry we have accredited Vision Therapists and Optometrists, who guide you through an eye training or vision therapy program customized to meet your needs. The program will include natural, non-invasive eye exercises. These eye exercises will be assigned to do at home. Regular weekly sessions in the office ensure that you make progress. Activities are progressively adjusted as your eyes change to encourage further visual improvements over time. You may also notice improved visual/spatial coordination, and reading skills.
Vision Therapy treatment activities are carefully selected to correct visual-motor or perceptual-cognitive inefficiencies. Treatment sessions include activities, exercises and procedures that increase the brain’s capacity to manage eye alignment, eye movements and visual processing.
This is NOT simply a program of eye exercises. Instead it is a guided (monitored) program targeted at helping you see better in specific areas – improving your overall visual performance. The activities and procedures use the elements of neuroplasticity* to help your brain make changes.
These elements are:
· Novel information
· Repetition
· Engagement when doing the activity
* Neuroplasticity: “the ability of nerve cells to change and modify their activity in response to changes in the environment” John Ratey, M.D. A User’s Guide to the Brain
During your program, your progress will be regularly evaluated. The “rewiring” activities will help the brain to use information from the eyes more productively.
As you actively follow the program, you will experience progress and notice improvements. A Vision Therapist will be working closely with you to teach, encourage and celebrate the progress. Vision therapy can benefit people of all ages and abilities.
How critical is it that our sensory systems work well together? Our sensory systems guide our development and give us information about the world around us. So, yes, absolutely crucial.
The Sensory Integration program at Vision Sense is a 30 day treatment, 12 consecutive days in-office and 18 days at-home. The visual, vestibular and listening systems are harmonized in a way that supports better integration between the senses and improves overall brain processing. This treatment can be life changing for those with sensory overwhelm e.g. autism, brain injuries.
The Sensory Integration program can be used as part of your vision therapy program or as a treatment on it's own.
As part of most treatment plans, syntonics uses safe, specific wavelengths of light in the visible spectrum, and brings about changes which balance your autonomic nervous system. They are particularly used to calm the sympathetic or "fight/flight" system, or to stimulate an amblyopic eye to start to change.
It can be a journey! Eyeglasses or contact lenses are a very important part of this journey. Neurofunctional lenses are designed to start to create changes in brain processing. Our goal is to help you make the changes necessary to allow your two eyes to work better together.
As neuroplastic changes occur, your neurofunctional lenses will also change. (Fortunately Vision Sense Optometry has a lens care package, which covers 1-2 lens changes)
Once your eyes work better together, your eyeglass prescription will become more stable as well.
