Amblyopia isn’t just poorer vision in an eye; it’s a neurological condition that makes it difficult for the brain to use both eyes together, leading to one eye becoming very dominant over the other.
This can result from a high prescription in one eye, an eye turn, or something physically blocking the vision in an eye (eg. congenital cataract).
While patching is the traditional treatment for improving eyesight, research has shown that patching helps the amblyopic eye see better only when it’s forced to. Once the patch is removed, the vision often regresses and the patient can go back to only using the better seeing eye.
Vision therapy helps train the eyes to see better together. Through neuroplasticity, the brain can be rewired to place less dominance on one eye and use both together. As neuroplasticity exists throughout a person’s whole life, it’s never too late to start treatment!
