Pediatric Development

Does my child need vision therapy?

Did You Know that Vision and Learning are Connected?

In fact:

  • 80% of school activities are visual in nature

  • 60% of children with learning difficulties have undetected vision problems

  • Having 20/20 vision only means a child can see at a distance

Many of the children we work with suffer from vision problems that impact their ability to learn, read, comprehend, and pay attention in school. Essential visual skills for learning involve the eyes being able to focus accurately, eyes teaming together, eyes tracking together, and efficient visual information processing. If these systems aren’t working efficiently, your child may be diagnosed with convergence insufficiency, accommodative dysfunction, or an oculomotor dysfunction.

How Can We Help?

Vision Sense Optometry goes beyond a regular eye exam with a proven, science based approach that works with your eyes to expand and develop vision. The goal will be to help both eyes work together more efficiently, and to improve brain functioning through vision.

At Vision Sense Optometry we go beyond vision correction using glasses. We tap into the neuroplasticity of the brain (the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life) and focus on building strong relationships between vision, eye coordination and the brain to help your child learn more easily and efficiently.

Who Does This Help?

We are happy to see children of all ages, including infants, toddlers, and school-aged children. Our doctors have added experience with children of all abilities including developmental difficulties and special needs.

Infants

The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that infants have their first eye examination between six and nine months of age.

A comprehensive eye exam can check that your child’s eyes are beginning to work together, that visual acuity is developing, and can detect conditions such as strabismus (eye turns) or amblyopia (lazy eye).

Toddlers
Preschool-aged children should have at least one eye exam between the ages of 2 and 5 years old.

At this stage, we make sure to monitor that your child’s eye focusing is developing well, depth perception is forming, and good eye-hand coordination is present.

School-Aged Children
School-aged children should have annual comprehensive eye exams.
Eye exams during this period help to identify developing refractive error issues, such as myopia and astigmatism, and ensure that your child’s vision is not impeding their learning.
